The DOT requires drivers of commercial vehicles be at least 21 years old and able to read, write, and speak English well enough to converse with people, read highway traffic signs, and write entries on reports and records.
You must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle and have the experience and training necessary to safely operate it.
You are also required to have current, correct, and complete driver qualifications on file with your employer, including a commercial motor vehicle operator’s license and an inquiry to previous employers, and your driving record for the last 3 years.
You must have experience and training in locating, distributing, and securing the cargo you’ll be transporting in or on the commercial motor vehicle you drive.
