You can do things to help prevent incidents during your trip. Click on these suggestions:
Inspect Your Vehicle
- Inspect your vehicle and equipment before you drive.
- A few minutes checking the basics, such as lights, oil, water, tires, gas, and engine before driving will reassure you your vehicle is in good condition.
- Check your battery has a strong charge and cable-to-terminal connection.
- Keep up with your scheduled maintenance and don’t put off making repairs. A well-maintained vehicle gives you a much better chance of avoiding a breakdown.
Secure Cargo and/or Passengers
- Double-check your cargo is properly loaded and secured. Nothing should move or shift as you drive.
- Make certain passengers are wearing seat belts.
Plan Your Route
- Before you start moving, enter the address of your destination in your GPS device or review any maps or written directions.
- Plan your trip to avoid obvious traffic issues such as rush hours near cities.
- Give yourself extra time, if possible, so your trip is not rushed.
- Check weather conditions.
Prepare Yourself
- Distracted driving and sleepy driving are two major causes of accidents.
- Do not drive while drowsy, fatigued, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- If you are experiencing symptoms such as feeling sick, tired, or dizzy, don’t drive.
